Our Leading Album of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Number One Spot.

On the surface, this album could seem more like an arduous university examination than the latest popular music project by a musician who just had a last hit featured a global pop star. Divided across 4 different movements and sung in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced album investigating female mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, often via the prism of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive roll call of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself renders the efforts of other artists seem quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That this album succeeds in avoid dry academic posturing is almost a miracle, with full praise going to Rosalía. While this is not her first project to alchemize historical sounds and the present, its stakes feel much greater on Lux, with the balancing act more precarious. What truly elevates this fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is an essential sense of fun. Much like the iconic Björk during her peak, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its tornado. Even when she's tearing your heart in two, the listener still desire to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines clearly during a stirring Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge thuds in like comedic force. The track then shifts into the frenetic track featuring galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The charm of this album lies in you never exactly know—nor want to predict—where you is going to next."

Nearly every track finishes in a totally different point than how it started. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic style begins off moody and sinister, with prowling beats, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key balancing act of the album is straddling the gap between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. It is no coincidence that it has achieved her first work to break into the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that feels to gather more and more infectious hooks as it spirals skyward. That trick gets echoed by a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture impact of other heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent ridiculousness. This is an abundant source of buried treasure that takes time to completely explore but doesn't seem like a chore. While other major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, this record is a lavish banquet at which the guests around the table, some intoxicated on holy wine, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative visionary.
